1st place in a wedding portrait competition!

I was recently honored with a 1st place award in the annual competition called “Vuoden hääkuva 2011″ (which roughly translates to “The best wedding photos of 2011″), and is held by the biggest wedding magazine in Finland. The winning photo is a winter wedding photo taken during a heavy snowfall. I see snowfall and rain as an possibility, not as an obstacle, to take wonderful and different wedding photos. :)

I’m really happy to have received this award, because this category had the most participants amongst all the categories, and because this was only the second time I participated in this competition. Thanks go to Satu & Topi – the romantic couple in this photo!

A winter wedding in Helsinki | Riina & Juha

Riina and Juha had the Agroksenmäen holvikellari as their wedding venue. It is an old storage facility built entirely out of stone! The venue was beautifully decorated and the colored lights were carefully chosen to make the mood of the place just the way they wanted it to be: intimate and romantic. Below are a few photos chosen by me to show you some of the great moments from their wedding.

Pre-wedding photos in the winter | Tracy & Victor

Tracy and Victor came to Finland for a week, and wanted their pre-wedding photos to be taken outside in the snow. They came from Hong Kong, where it is typical to take a lot of pre-wedding photos that you can use on your wedding day. Most couples here in Finland take the wedding photos on the wedding day in about 1 hour, but for pre-wedding photos you can easily spend 3 hours in different locations. I recommend all wedding couples to consider this option, because it really takes some stress off from the real wedding day, as it tends to be “quite” a busy day. ;)

Wedding portraits in Helsinki | Anastasia & Mika

Just a quick update with a few portrait pictures from todays wedding.

Anastasia and Mika got married in Helsinki, and we took the wedding pictures in the center of the city. The sun had just gone down, but I still managed to get some really nice outdoors shots with them. :) The last portait was taken indoors at Restaurant Sipuli.

Satu & Topi winter wedding photo plus wedding magazine coverage

I just had to post this one image from todays wedding. Satu & Topi, a really great couple, had their wedding at Kulosaaren Casino. And although the weather was pretty bad, it did allow me to capture the mood of their snowy winter wedding day in this portrait taken in the evening. I hope you like it too!

And I was lucky enough to have my pictures pubished in the newest edition of Häät & Juhlat. You can see some (sorry for the low quality) shots of that article below. :) There is a featured wedding of Jussi and Maria found elsewhere in that same magazine, and those wedding photos are also taken by me.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!!! :)

Wedding Photojournalistic Association (WPJA) awards

As of 2010, I’m the only Finnish wedding photographer to have earned the Gold (1st place) and Blue (5th place) medallions from the world largest wedding photographers association – the prestigious WPJA (www.wpja.com). Actually, no other Finnish photographer has earned any medals in the WPJA, so I’m very humbled by my accomplisment. WPJA competitions are worldwide, with hundreds of the worlds top wedding photographers attending, so I am very happy to have achieved this honor so soon in my career. :)
